AM I TOO OLD FOR PERMANENT MAKEUP?

It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often.

The short answer?

Absolutely not!

In fact, many of my clients are in their 50s, 60s and 70s, and some of the most beautiful, confidence-boosting results I create are for women in these age groups.

It’s a misconception that permanent makeup is reserved for the younger, fashion-led crowd.

From my clinics in Musselburgh, East Lothian and Kendal, Cumbria, I specialise in natural-looking permanent makeup that doesn’t follow trends - it’s designed to look just right for you at every stage in life, complementing your features, not competing with them.

WHERE THIS QUESTION COMES FROM

If you’re wondering whether you’re too old for permanent makeup, you’re not alone.

Many women have seen badly done cosmetic tattooing that looked:

  • Strong & blocky

  • Obviously tattooed

  • Harsh as the skin aged

It’s completely understandable that this can create hesitation!

But permanent makeup has evolved enormously over the past decade, especially in the hands of skilled artists who specialise in soft, natural techniques.

AGE ISN'T THE DECIDING FACTOR

Rather than age itself, what really matters is:

  • Your own health (certain medications / medical conditions can require a conversation to check suitability for treatment)

  • Technique used - soft and gentle is always the right choice!

  • Appropriate colour selection

Mature skin simply requires a more considered approach.

Thinner, more delicate skin responds best to gentle techniques and subtle pigment placement. This is why modern machine permanent makeup is favourable over microbladed brows for mature clients - it allows for more control and refinement.

With the right technique, application and skill, permanent makeup can look incredibly natural at any age.

WHY MANY 50+ WOMEN CHOOSE PERMANENT MAKEUP

Common reasons include:

  • Brows becoming sparse due to menopause and the natural aging process

  • Lips losing definition and colour

  • Struggling to apply eye makeup because you need reading glasses - but the glasses themselves getting in the way of you actually reaching your eyes!

  • Reduced desire to spend time applying daily makeup

  • A love of holidays, but not a lover of brows sweating off in the sun!

My clients aren’t looking for bold - they’re looking for softness, balance and an easier life.

NATURAL RESULTS ARE EVERYTHING

A common fear is that permanent makeup will look obvious or “too much”.

In reality, cosmetic tattooing, when done correctly, should be beautifully understated. One of the biggest compliments I receive is when clients tell me no one realises they’ve had their brows tattooed. Friends comment they look fresher, but can’t quite pinpoint what’s changed.

The right skill and technique can create:

  • Soft, hazy brows

  • Barely-there lash enhancement

  • Defined lip line to restore shape and add a natural flush of colour

The goal is never to make you look over-done. Traditional makeup can easily be added to permanent makeup for occasions when you want to look more ‘made-up’.

A GENTLE, SKIN-FRIENDLY APPROACH

Another concern I often hear is whether permanent makeup is too harsh for older skin.

Despite the word tattooing, cosmetic tattooing:

  • Is superficial compared to body tattooing

  • Uses softer inks, designed specially for the face

  • Naturally and intentionally fades over time

Using advanced machine techniques allows for controlled, skin-conscious application that prioritises comfort and healing.

This makes it a beautiful option for those seeking permanent makeup for mature skin.

CONFIDENCE HAS NO AGE LIMIT

One of the loveliest parts of my work is seeing the emotional impact permanent makeup can have.

Clients often tell me they feel:

  • More youthful looking

  • An increased confidence

  • Comfortable being seen makeup-free

  • More ‘put-together’

There is something incredibly powerful about subtle enhancements that support how you feel, rather than changing who you are.

And confidence is never age-restricted!

A BESPOKE APPROACH FOR EVERY CLIENT

No two faces are the same. That’s why every treatment I offer is entirely bespoke.

From my clinics in East Lothian and Cumbria, I work closely with each client to consider:

  • Skin type

  • Facial structure

  • Lifestyle and preferences

  • Desired level of subtlety

For mature clients especially, the focus is always on timeless results that will age beautifully.

SO ... ARE YOU TOO OLD FOR PERMANENT MAKEUP?

If you’re asking the question, the answer is almost always the same:

You’re not too old - we just need the right approach.

With modern techniques, sophisticated / science-led pigments, and an experienced artist who understands mature skin, permanent makeup can be softer, more elegant and more natural than ever before.

FINAL THOUGHTS ...

Permanent makeup isn’t about turning back time.

It’s about subtle enhancements that give you a boost. Because when you feel good about how you look, your confidence shines through.

You wake up each day still looking like you, just the best version of you!
